Out here the cause is nearly always the same. Houses from the 1960s and 1970s were plumbed with earthenware, those lines are fifty years old now, and Northmead is one of the greener pockets of the City of Parramatta area, with bush gullies running through it. Roots find old joints.

So the real choice is not who can get water moving this afternoon. Plenty can. It is whether the person you ring already knows what tends to be under a Northmead yard, and whether he shows you the pipe instead of a theory.

    About the suburb

Northmead is a leafy suburb, which is not a compliment where drains are concerned. The Toongabbie Creek bushland corridor cuts along one side, with bush gullies and heavy tree cover feeding into the residential streets. Trees near a creek line put out wide, aggressive roots looking for water.

The housing did the rest. The suburb was largely built out from the 1960s to the 1980s, much of it as Housing Commission homes on sizeable blocks, and sizeable blocks mean long drain runs from the house to the connection point. Plenty of those original houses are still standing with their original earthenware underneath. Where the block has been redeveloped into a duplex or townhouses, the new dwellings often tee into a drain that was never replaced, just reused.

    The blocked drain work itself

The line gets opened first, usually at the inspection shaft or the overflow relief gully. An eel punches through the mass so the water drains, then the jetter washes the pipe wall and flushes the cuttings to the main. Boring a hole through roots and calling it done is why people ring again in four months.

Then the camera goes down the clean line. On a fifty year old earthenware sewer you look for three things: fine root hair at the joints, a joint dropped out of alignment, and a section cracked or collapsed under ground movement. Each has a different answer, and you see the footage first.

Fixing it properly might mean relining the run, cutting out a short damaged section, or just keeping an eye on it. Stormwater is a separate system that blocks on silt and leaf litter, covered under stormwater and drainage work. Full method on the blocked drains page.

    About Mustafa

Mustafa is the owner operator, Sydney born and bred, working under Licence No. 232989C. Drain work is not handed to a subcontractor. He runs the machine and the camera, and he explains the footage.

That matters more on drains than most jobs, because you cannot see the thing you are paying to fix. Showing you the inside of your own pipe is the honest version of the conversation.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do the drains block more often after a windy or dry spell?
Roots chase moisture. In a dry stretch the soil gives them nothing, so they push harder towards the damp air and seepage around a cracked sewer joint. That is why a line that behaved all winter can close over in a hot dry month, and why the leafier streets near the creek corridor notice it most.
Is it the street tree or my own garden causing it?
Both are candidates and the camera settles it. Roots entering from the front boundary side usually point at a street tree or a neighbour's. Roots coming in from the side or rear are normally something in your own yard. Knowing which end of the property the intrusion is at also tells you whether removing a tree would actually achieve anything.
What is an electric eel and when is it better than jetting?
An eel is a rotating cable with a cutting head that chews through a blockage mechanically. It is good for punching a hole through a solid root mass quickly and for lines where high pressure water is not suitable. Jetting washes the pipe wall clean and carries the debris away, which leaves a better result. Most jobs here use both, eel first then jet.
How old does earthenware pipe usually get before it starts failing?
It varies with ground conditions, but the 1960s and 1970s lines around here are roughly fifty years old and that is well into the range where mortar joints have gone soft and the pipe has taken some movement. The pipe itself can be sound while the joints are the weak point. A camera run tells you which of those you are dealing with.
