Three options, and the right one depends on your house rather than on what is being pushed this year. Gas storage, continuous flow gas, electric storage and heat pumps all have a place, and the honest answer usually comes down to what is already connected and where the old unit was sitting.

We cover all of Northmead, from the older streets off Briens Road to the newer buildings along Windsor Road, and it is close enough to base that a dead system can generally be repaired or replaced the same day. Seven days, with 24/7 callouts when a unit has burst and is flooding something.

    About the suburb

Jemena reticulates mains gas through the established Sydney suburbs, and Northmead is one of them, so most of the original 1960s to 1980s houses have a gas service already at the boundary. Those houses generally run gas storage or continuous flow, with electric storage in the pockets where gas was never brought in.

What complicates it here is how much of the suburb has been rebuilt. A lot of the old Housing Commission homes sat on big blocks and have been replaced by two-storey brick houses, duplexes and townhouses, so where one house used to draw hot water there are now two or three dwellings, often with narrow side setbacks. That changes the flue options on a gas unit and it changes where a heat pump can reasonably sit without pointing a fan at somebody's bedroom window. Along Windsor Road the apartment stock is a different problem again, with units mostly on electric storage in a cupboard sized by the builder.

    Common questions from Northmead homeowners

Is mains gas available on most Northmead streets?
Through the established parts, yes, so most of the older houses have the option. What decides it is whether there is already a service to the property and enough capacity where the unit sits. If your house never had gas connected, running a new service for a hot water unit alone is rarely worth the cost, and electric or a heat pump makes more sense.
How much room does a heat pump actually need?
More than people expect. The unit needs clear air around the fan and a path for the condensate to drain away, and it should not be boxed into a narrow side passage. On the older Northmead blocks that is easy. On a duplex or townhouse with a two metre side setback it takes some thought, because the neighbour's bedroom window is often right there.
    Are heat pumps noisy?
They have a fan and a compressor, so they make a noise similar to a split system air conditioner outdoor unit. On a wide block that is a non-issue. On a shared boundary it is worth siting carefully, which is a conversation to have before it is installed rather than after.
Does continuous flow gas run out of hot water?
Not in the way a cylinder does, because it heats as it goes. What it does have is a flow limit, so if three showers and the dishwasher are all running, the temperature can drop off. Sizing is the fix, and that is worked out from how many bathrooms and outlets are likely to run at once.
My unit is in a cold shaded spot down the back. Does that matter?
For a heat pump, yes. It pulls heat out of the air, so a permanently shaded southern wall near the gully performs worse than an open, sunnier position. It will still work, it just works harder. For gas or electric storage the position makes no real difference to performance, only to access and pipe runs.
The old unit is on the wall and the new one is a different shape. Is that a problem?
It is manageable but it is part of the quote. Changing system type often means new brackets or a base, relocated water connections, a new flue path on gas, or a different relief drain run. Those are worked out on site before you are given a price, so the figure you approve covers the actual install rather than an ideal one.

    About Mustafa

Mustafa owns and runs Original Plumbing. Sydney born and bred, working under Licence No. 232989C, which covers the gas work as well as the water side. On a system changeover that licence is the thing standing behind the compliance paperwork, so it is worth knowing whose name is on it.

He does not have a preferred brand to move or a monthly target to hit. If your existing system suits the house and only needs a part, that is what gets recommended, and he is happy to say so even when the bigger job was sitting right there.
