How old does a system have to be before replacing beats repairing?

There is no single number, but the shape of the decision is consistent. A young unit with one failed part is worth repairing every time. A unit well past its expected service life with a major component gone, or a cylinder already leaking from the tank itself, is throwing money at something that will fail again. The relief valve keeps dripping. Is that serious?

A small discharge when the unit is heating is normal and healthy. A constant drip is not. It usually means the valve itself has worn, or the mains pressure is too high, or the tank is scaling up. Left alone it wastes a surprising amount of hot water and eventually the valve seizes, which is the one failure you do not want on a pressurised cylinder.

The shower goes hot then cold. What causes that?

On continuous flow, it is often the unit cycling because the flow rate is too low, sometimes because a filter or aerator is partly blocked. On storage systems it usually means the tank is running out sooner than it should, which points at a failed thermostat, a dead lower element or a build-up of sediment. In a unit it can also be a worn mixer cartridge blending badly.

Can I swap from electric storage to gas in a Westmead unit?

In an apartment, rarely. You need a gas supply to the lot, a compliant flue path and somewhere legal to put the unit, and most existing flats fail on at least one of those. In a house or a townhouse with mains gas already connected it is usually straightforward.
