Common questions

Will my insurer pay to have the leak found?

Many home and strata policies cover the cost of locating a hidden leak, and some cover the resulting damage but not the failed pipe itself. It varies by policy and we cannot tell you what yours says. What we can do is give you a clear description of what was found and where, which is what the insurer will ask for before they decide anything.

What does the insurer usually want documented?

In our experience they want the location of the leak, what caused it, photographs of the damage, and confirmation that a licensed plumber carried out the inspection and the repair. Licence details go on our paperwork as a matter of course. Keep anything that shows how long it has been happening, including old water bills.

There is mould on the wall. Do you handle that as well?

We handle the water, not the mould. Mould is a symptom, and remediating it while the pipe is still leaking is wasted money. Our part is finding and fixing the source and drying out the cause, then a mould specialist can deal with what is left with some confidence it will not come back.

The leak is in a common wall. Who lodges the claim?

If the pipework is common property, the owners corporation and its strata insurance normally handle it, and you would claim separately for your own contents and any fit-out. That split is exactly why the report matters, because it establishes which side of the boundary the failed pipe sat on.
