The pilot light is out on the gas unit. Can I relight it myself?

There are instructions on the panel and it is reasonable to try once. What matters is what happens next. If it lights and stays lit you may have had a gust or a brief supply interruption. If it will not hold, something is failing, usually the thermocouple, and repeated relighting will not change that. Do not keep trying if you can smell gas.

Only the hot tap runs rusty. Is that the tank going?

Usually, yes. Cold water comes through the same mains, so when discolouration shows up on the hot side alone the source is the cylinder itself. What you are seeing is the inside of the tank shedding after the sacrificial anode has been eaten away. It is a late stage sign, and it is worth planning the replacement rather than waiting for the floor to get wet.

Electric tank, no hot water, but the switchboard looks fine. What next?

A few things sit between the board and the water. Many electric cylinders run on a controlled load circuit, so the fault can be in that supply rather than the main breaker. Beyond that it is commonly a failed element, a thermostat that has stopped calling for heat, or a tripped safety cutout that has gone for a reason worth finding.

We have a big block. Does that open up options a smaller yard would not?

It does, and it is one of the few genuine advantages of this part of Sydney. A heat pump needs clear air around the fan, a condensate run and some distance from bedroom windows. On a typical Greystanes block with room down the side and out the back, siting one is straightforward. On a narrow townhouse setback it is a much tighter conversation.

If it cannot be repaired today, are we without hot water overnight?
